How long does it actually take to get into ketosis?

Started keto Monday. Today is Thursday. Bought ketone strips and they're still showing negative. Did I do something wrong? I've been eating under 20g carbs every day — I even downloaded an app to make sure.

Every article I read says "2-4 days" but I'm on day 4 and nothing. I'm starting to think maybe keto just doesn't work for me or my metabolism is broken somehow. Should I keep going or is this a sign I should try something else?

Don't panic — totally normal. Let me explain what's actually happening.

Your liver stores glycogen (glucose). The average person has about 100g in the liver and another 400g in muscles — that's roughly 2,000 calories worth. Before ketosis starts, your body needs to burn through most of that glycogen. Depending on your starting point and how active you are, this takes 2-7 days for most people.

Also, urine strips are the least accurate way to test. They measure excess ketones that get excreted — but once your body becomes more efficient at using ketones (around week 2-3), it excretes less and the strips can show "negative" even when you're fully in ketosis. Blood meters are the gold standard if you want accurate data.

Keep going. You're almost certainly making progress even if the strip doesn't show it.

Took me 6 days the first time. I thought the same thing — maybe I'm broken, maybe it's not working. Day 7 I woke up and my urine strip was dark purple. The shift happened overnight.

Things that speed it up: fasted cardio (a 30 min walk before breakfast), keeping carbs at 15g instead of 20g for the first week, and most importantly — don't stress. Cortisol (stress hormone) can actually slow the transition.

Also check — are you eating hidden carbs? Things that trip people up: certain protein powders (some have 15-20g carbs), keto labeled products that are actually not that low, nuts if you're eating too many, dairy if you're sensitive to lactose, sauces and dressings with sugar.

Log every single thing you ate this week and double-check the carb counts. Even one high-carb item can reset your glycogen stores and push back ketosis.

My first time took 8 days and I was losing my mind checking the strips every morning lol. Now on my second keto stint (took a break for summer) and I got into ketosis in 2 days because I was already fat adapted from before. It gets easier each time.

UPDATE: Day 5 this morning — faint pink on the strip! It's happening! Going to keep at it. Thank you everyone, really needed this reassurance yesterday.

So happy for you! The first positive strip feeling is genuinely exciting. Now just ride it out and don't cheat — it takes way longer to get back in once you're out than it did to get in the first time.
