Weekend is coming and I'm going to a wedding. I want to know honestly — if I have a couple of drinks will I completely destroy my ketosis and have to start over? Which drinks are safest?
Can I drink alcohol on keto? What actually happens?

Safest options: Dry wine (red or white) at about 3-4g carbs per glass. Spirits (vodka, whiskey, tequila, gin) have zero carbs — mix with sparkling water and lime. Light beer at 5-7g per can.
Avoid: Regular beer, sweet wines, cocktails with juice or syrup, hard ciders.
What actually happens: Alcohol doesn't directly kick you out of ketosis but your liver prioritizes processing alcohol over producing ketones. Ketone production pauses while you're drinking and resumes once alcohol is cleared.
The bigger issue: alcohol on keto hits harder and faster — no glycogen buffer. You'll feel drunker on less alcohol.
The day AFTER drinking on keto can be rough. Before bed drink a big glass of water with electrolytes — salt and potassium. You'll feel significantly better in the morning. The hangover is worse because dehydration compounds with already-lower electrolytes.
I stick to one or two glasses of dry red wine at social events and it hasn't affected my results at all. Occasional moderate drinking doesn't derail keto for most people. The key is choosing drinks without carbs and not going overboard.
Dry red wine and vodka soda it is. The hangover warning is really helpful — will do electrolytes before bed. Thank you!
