Keto flu — how bad is it really and how long does it last?

Starting keto next week and I keep reading about "keto flu" and I'm genuinely scared. I have a demanding job where I can't afford to be foggy or tired for days. Can people who've been through it tell me honestly — how bad is it really? Is it like actual flu or is that just dramatic?

Also how long does it last? I've seen "a few days" and I've seen "two weeks" and those are very different things for someone who can't just call in sick.

Honest answer: it varies ENORMOUSLY between people. I had very mild symptoms for about 2 days — slightly tired, small headache. My wife had it bad for 4 days — genuine fatigue, headaches, irritability. My gym buddy had almost nothing at all.

The severity is almost entirely determined by how aggressively you restrict carbs and — most importantly — how well you manage electrolytes. Most of what people call "keto flu" is actually sodium, potassium, and magnesium depletion, not some inherent reaction to ketosis.

My protocol that kept it minimal: from day one, drink bouillon or bone broth (sodium), take potassium and magnesium supplements, and increase salt on everything. I mean everything. Sounds weird but it genuinely works.

I started keto on a Friday specifically so the first 2-3 rough days would be on the weekend. If you have that flexibility I'd highly recommend it. By Monday I was already feeling better and the clarity that started kicking in around day 5-6 was worth every minute of the rough patch.

The "flu" part for me was: headache, tired, mild nausea, and being kind of short-tempered (my wife can confirm). No fever, not actually sick. More like a medium hangover that lasts 3 days.

I was terrified too and honestly it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. Days 2-4 were rough but "rough" meant tired and slightly headachy — I still went to work. What got me through: LMNT electrolyte packets in water throughout the day, eating every time I felt off, and being kind to myself.

The fog lifting around day 6 and the crazy mental clarity that comes after is genuinely the best I've felt in years. The short-term discomfort is absolutely worth it.

To directly answer your question: it is NOT like actual flu. No fever, no body aches, no respiratory symptoms. It's more like moderate fatigue and headache that comes and goes. Most people rate it a 4-6/10 on discomfort at worst.

Duration: with good electrolyte management — 2-4 days. Without electrolytes — up to a week for some people.

Practical tip for keeping your job performance up: start on a Thursday. By Monday you're usually through the worst of it. And keep LMNT or a quality electrolyte drink at your desk.

This is so reassuring. I'm going to start Thursday as suggested. Ordered LMNT already. I'll report back on how it goes for me personally.

One more thing — I found that keeping busy helped more than resting. If I sat around focusing on how I felt it seemed worse. Distract yourself, stay moving, drink your electrolytes, and suddenly it's day 5 and you feel amazing. It passes faster than you expect.
