Bad breath on keto — how to fix without breaking ketosis

I'm on week 2 of keto and my wife just very diplomatically told me my breath has been... different. I looked it up and apparently "keto breath" is a real thing from acetone being exhaled as a ketone. How do I fix this without doing something that breaks ketosis?

Keto breath is real and temporary for most people — it typically peaks in weeks 2-3 and improves significantly once you're fully fat adapted and burning ketones efficiently rather than exhaling excess ones. But there are things that help right now:

Works without affecting ketosis:

— Drink more water: dilutes the acetone concentration
— Tongue scraper morning and night: removes bacterial buildup that amplifies the issue
— Green tea: antimicrobial, temporarily neutralizes odors
— Parsley and mint: chew fresh herbs (minimal carbs)
— Xylitol or erythritol mints/gum: keto-friendly, specifically fight breath bacteria
— Better oral hygiene overall: brush 2x daily, floss, mouthwash (check for alcohol-free, sugar-free)

The tongue scraper tip is the most underrated one. The white film on your tongue is where most of the odor comes from on keto. A $5 tongue scraper used twice daily makes a dramatic difference. Do it before brushing teeth.

For me it mostly went away at the 4-week mark without doing anything special. The body just gets better at utilizing ketones and excretes less through breath. If it's really bothering your wife short-term, the water intake increase and xylitol gum combination worked fastest in my experience.

Good timing on this post — I drive for a living and interact with customers all day. Ordered a tongue scraper on Amazon and buying xylitol gum today. Reassuring that it's temporary.
